Congress: Stop ICE From Targeting Refugees

The Trump administration is now empowering ICE to arrest and detain refugees.

A new DHS memo allows ICE agents to target refugees who have been in the U.S. for one year but have not yet secured a green card, reversing a 2010 policy that protected them from detention based solely on paperwork delays. These are people who entered the country legally after surviving war and persecution. Now they face arrest.

Refugees undergo some of the most rigorous vetting of anyone admitted to the United States. The process can take years and includes extensive background checks, security screenings, and interviews. They followed the rules. They were granted lawful status. Treating them like deportation targets is a cruel escalation of Trump’s mass deportation agenda.

This guidance could expose hundreds of thousands of refugees to detention, even if they have committed no crimes. Families could be torn apart because of bureaucratic backlogs, not public safety threats.

Congress has the power to stop this. If Congress allows ICE to detain lawful refugees without consequence, they are choosing cruelty over justice.

Refugees came here legally seeking safety. Congress must act now to stop ICE from turning that promise into a trap.
