We, the undersigned, urge you to protect critical student loan and federal aid programs that are at risk of being eliminated. Income-Driven Repayment (IDR) plans and the Public Student Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program help millions of Americans struggling with student loan payments. We call upon Congress to: - Protect PSLF eligibility for all borrowers working in the public sector and qualifying nonprofits. - Uphold all IDR plans implemented by the Department of Education, including the Pay As You Earn (PAYE) and Income Contingent Repayment (ICR) plans. By taking these actions, Congress can demonstrate its commitment to more than 45 million Americans who have student loan debt. Recent data proves that many borrowers are very worried that if PSLF and IDR programs disappear, their payments will increase drastically. SDCC’s latest survey shows that 71% of borrowers are enrolled in an Income-Driven Repayment (IDR) plan, and 47% of borrowers are working towards Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF). These repayment plans benefit millions of Americans across the country. The current threats from Congress and the Department of Education to gut these programs create widespread uncertainty for those currently in these repayment plans. It is cruel and heartless to deprive borrowers of the economic stability and lifeline granted to them through these repayment options. Therefore, we call on Congress to protect these programs and put Americans’ best interests front and center. Education is a pillar of economic mobility and opportunity in our country. We urge Congress to take decisive action to defend these programs and ensure that all borrowers have the support they need to succeed.
