Congress Must Pause New AI Data Centers Now

Congress must immediately impose a nationwide moratorium on new AI data centers before these projects cause further damage to our communities, our power grid, and our climate.

The crisis is already here. Elon Musk’s xAI sought approval for massive gas turbines in Memphis that would increase air pollution in neighborhoods already struggling with industrial emissions. New AI facilities are driving record electricity demand, forcing utilities to restart fossil-fuel generation. Data center clusters are straining local grids and raising household power bills.

And this isn’t just a concern for progressives. Reuters found that many Trump voters are pushing back against these projects because they drain local water supplies, increase pollution, and saddle residents with higher utility costs. When people across the political spectrum are alarmed, it’s a sign that Congress must act.

A moratorium is the only responsible step while lawmakers evaluate the actual environmental and economic impact of these facilities. Environmental groups are already demanding a national pause, warning that unchecked AI expansion could lock the country into decades of massive energy and water consumption.

Public pressure is the only way Congress moves. When thousands speak out, lawmakers respond—through oversight hearings, public statements, and direct pressure on agencies approving these permits. If we act now, we can stop harmful projects, force transparency, and hold corporations accountable.

Congress is shaping its 2025 agenda right now, and companies are racing to secure new permits before the public understands the consequences. We have a short window to act.
