Congress Must Investigate Attacks on Blue States

The Trump administration ordered a sweeping federal review of funding sent to 14 states and Washington, D.C. — all jurisdictions that voted for Kamala Harris in 2024. Agencies have been given days to report back, signaling an imminent attempt to cancel or freeze federal dollars based on how Americans voted. This is not oversight. It is retaliation.

Courts have already intervened. Federal judges have blocked or paused multiple Trump administration attempts to freeze welfare, child care, and other essential funding, finding that the executive branch cannot unilaterally withhold money Congress has appropriated. According to budget experts, freezing federal funds to states would disrupt billions of dollars that support health care, infrastructure, disaster relief, and child care for millions of Americans — regardless of party.

This is part of an escalating authoritarian agenda: undermine elections by claiming fraud without evidence, weaponize federal power against political opponents, and use funding as leverage to force states into compliance.

We call on Congress to immediately investigate the administration’s January 2026 funding review and the coordinated use of federal forces against Democratic-led states and cities.

Democracy does not end at the ballot box, and federal resources do not belong to one party or one president. Congress must act now to defend the Constitution, protect communities, and stop the abuse of power before irreversible harm is done.
