Clean Power Now — Before AI Crashes the Grid

Families across America are already stretched thin by rising costs — and the very last thing people can handle is higher energy bills or dangerous, preventable blackouts. Yet that’s exactly the risk the Trump Administration’s cuts to clean-energy programs are creating. At a moment when our climate is in crisis, our grid is strained, and electricity demand is exploding because of AI and data centers, the Trump Administration is pulling us backward and leaving everyday people to pay the price.

AI systems and massive new data centers are driving a surge in electricity use unlike anything we’ve seen in decades. AI-driven data centers could increase global power demand by up to 165% by 2030 compared to 2023 levels.

In the U.S., data centers could account for 4.6% to 9.1% of all electricity consumption by 2030, equating to roughly 200 terawatt-hours — enough energy to power nearly 11 million homes.

Experts warn that demand could increase even more. Without new clean-power sources, the result will be skyrocketing energy bills, overloaded grids, and widespread outages that threaten health and safety.

It is clear that decision-makers won’t starve AI of its energy needs — to offset this demand, new and responsibly-sourced clean energy sources must rapidly be added to the development roadmap.

Climate change is fueling more destructive storms, heat waves, wildfires, and extreme weather that are already overwhelming our fragile power systems. Hurricanes are knocking out power for weeks, heat waves are straining grids to the breaking point, and flooding is destroying critical infrastructure. We need a rapid transition to responsible clean energy, not just to cut pollution, but to build a stronger, more resilient grid that can withstand the escalating climate threats communities face every year.

But instead of preparing the country for this new reality, the Trump Administration has slashed the clean-energy programs we desperately need. These cuts aren’t just policy choices — they’re threats to our economic security, our climate future, and the stability of the grid we all rely on.

Call on the Trump Administration to take immediate action:

1: Restore and expand clean-energy incentives so America can rapidly build the wind, solar, and battery storage needed to meet rising demand.

2: Invest in grid resilience and transmission upgrades to prevent outages and stabilize household costs everywhere.

3: Set strong national standards requiring AI companies and data centers to run on 100% clean electricity.

4: End subsidies for new oil and gas, which drag us deeper into pollution and delay the transition we urgently need.
