Cheer On the ACLU for Fighting Book Bans in Military Schools

Books belong on shelves—not in boxes. Celebrations of Black history, gender equality, and diverse stories belong in schools—not erased by censorship. That’s why we’re cheering on the ACLU for taking the Department of Defense to court over its sweeping bans on books, discussions, and events in military-run schools across the globe.

Under President Trump’s executive orders, the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) removed hundreds of titles, canceled cultural celebrations, and scrubbed curriculum that reflected the rich diversity of America’s students. That includes beloved classics like To Kill a Mockingbird, history lessons about civil rights heroes, and even basic sex ed chapters that help keep kids safe.

These students—many of whom are the children of military families serving our country—deserve access to education that reflects the truth of our history and the fullness of their identities.

We’re standing with the ACLU, military families, and brave students who are walking out, speaking up, and fighting back.

Add your name to cheer them on in their fight for free speech, educational equity, and the rights of every student to learn without fear or censorship.
