Celebrate Virginia Democrats Standing Up for Fair Maps

Virginia Democrats just took a major step to defend free and fair elections. The Virginia House of Delegates passed a Democratic-backed constitutional amendment that would allow the state to redraw congressional maps mid-decade — giving Virginia the power to fight back against nationwide GOP gerrymanders designed to rig elections and lock in unfair advantages.

This amendment is a smart, necessary response to Donald Trump’s push for Republican-controlled states to manipulate district lines outside the normal census cycle. If one party can change the rules whenever it benefits them, democracy becomes a game — and voters lose. Virginia lawmakers are making sure Democrats aren’t forced to sit back while Republicans try to rewrite the map and silence millions of voices.

Just as importantly, this measure keeps Virginia’s bipartisan redistricting commission in place for the regular cycle — and puts the final decision where it belongs: with the people. If it passes the Senate and clears a statewide referendum, voters will decide whether Virginia should have the tools to protect fair representation through 2030.

Add your name to celebrate Virginia Democrats for standing up to gerrymandering, defending fair elections, and fighting for a democracy where voters choose politicians — not the other way around.
