We applaud the Campaign Legal Center, State Democracy Defenders Fund, League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), Secure Families Initiative, and the Arizona Students' Association for filing a critical lawsuit to stop President Trump's unconstitutional attempt to overhaul the U.S. election system through executive fiat. This bold legal action challenges an executive order that would impose proof of citizenship requirements, restrict vote-by-mail deadlines, and give unprecedented federal control over state-run elections — all without congressional approval. The lawsuit defends the foundation of our democracy by insisting that the president cannot sidestep Congress, override constitutional authority, or strip Americans of their voting rights with the stroke of a pen. Trump’s order undermines the separation of powers and violates long-established laws like the National Voter Registration Act and the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act. It also directly threatens military voters, Americans abroad, and millions of U.S. citizens who may not possess the narrowly defined documents required under this order. Voter suppression disguised as “election integrity” is a threat to every American. We celebrate this legal action as a necessary defense of democracy, civil rights, and the rule of law. It sends a clear message: no president, regardless of their party or power, can single-handedly rewrite the rules of our elections. To every attorney, organizer, and plaintiff standing up in court to defend free and fair elections — thank you. We’ve seen what happens when voter suppression is allowed to fester. This time, we will fight back.
