Celebrate the Court’s Decision to Protect Elections in NC

We celebrate the recent ruling by a North Carolina court blocking an unconstitutional Republican power grab over the state’s Board of Elections.

Thanks to this decision, the authority to appoint election officials will remain with the governor — where it belongs under the state constitution. This is a huge victory for democracy, fair elections, and the will of the people.

The GOP-backed law, SB 382, would have stripped Governor Josh Stein of his power to appoint election board members and handed it over to a partisan state auditor. This blatant attempt to seize control of election administration just before a critical presidential election year was rightly rejected by the courts.

Judges Edwin Wilson and Lori Hamilton correctly affirmed that the legislature cannot “unreasonably disturb” the executive powers granted to the governor. Their decision upholds the principle of checks and balances and sends a powerful message: elections should be run fairly — not manipulated for political gain.

We thank Governor Josh Stein for defending our democracy, and we stand with the court’s ruling that safeguards the integrity of elections in North Carolina.
