Celebrate the Court Ruling Protecting Voting Rights

We celebrate the powerful decision by U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly to block the Trump administration’s unlawful executive order requiring proof of citizenship to register to vote. This ruling is a clear defense of our Constitution and a firm stand for voting rights in America.

Judge Kollar-Kotelly rightly affirmed that it is Congress and the states—not the President—who have the constitutional authority to regulate federal elections. Her decision halts an overreach that would have made it harder for countless Americans, particularly those receiving public assistance, to exercise their fundamental right to vote.

By preventing the Election Assistance Commission from withholding funds from states that refused to comply, and by calling out this executive order as an attempt to “short-circuit Congress’s deliberative process,” the court has reaffirmed the separation of powers and safeguarded our democracy.

We applaud the Democratic National Committee, the NAACP, LULAC, and all others who stood up in court to protect access to the ballot. This is a victory for every American who believes that our elections should be free, fair, and accessible to all.
