A federal judge has dismissed the Trump Department of Justice's lawsuit seeking New Jersey's private voter registration database, marking the 18th consecutive court defeat for the administration's nationwide effort to obtain sensitive voter information from states.

The court ruled that federal law does not give the Department of Justice the sweeping authority it claimed, rejecting its attempt to access New Jersey's continuously updated voter registration database, which contains highly sensitive personal information. The judge also reaffirmed that the Constitution primarily entrusts the administration of elections to the states and that the federal government's role is limited by law.
