Celebrate Ruling Blocking Deportations to Third Countries

We celebrate the courageous and constitutionally sound decision by U.S. District Judge Brian E. Murphy to halt the Trump administration’s dangerous and unlawful policy of deporting migrants to third countries where they have no prior connection or opportunity to seek legal protection.

This ruling is not just a legal victory—it is a profound affirmation of due process, human rights, and America’s longstanding commitment to refugee protections. By issuing a nationwide temporary restraining order, Judge Murphy has ensured that migrants cannot be shipped off to unfamiliar nations without notice or a chance to challenge their removal, shielding them from potential violence, persecution, and legal limbo.

This policy was a direct threat to the safety of thousands of vulnerable individuals and a blatant violation of both U.S. asylum law and international treaties like the Convention Against Torture. It exemplified the Trump administration’s broader attempt to turn cruelty into policy—stripping people of their rights and sending them into harm’s way with no recourse.

Thanks to this ruling in D.V.D. v. U.S. Department of Homeland Security, that effort has been stopped—for now. It is a critical safeguard for asylum-seekers, families, and individuals who came to the United States seeking refuge and fairness, not fear and abandonment.

We thank Judge Murphy and the legal advocates, including the National Immigration Litigation Alliance, who brought this case forward. Their tireless defense of justice and humanity shines a light in dark times.
