Celebrate Pittsburgh Nurses Winning Paid Parental Leave

Nurses in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, have achieved a historic victory for working families! After months of organizing, advocacy, and community support, nurses at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital helped secure the nation's first countywide paid parental leave policy, giving eligible workers in Allegheny County access to 12 weeks of paid leave.

The nurses launched their campaign after witnessing firsthand how the lack of paid leave forces parents to make heartbreaking choices. Some parents of babies in neonatal intensive care units were returning to work while their newborns were still hospitalized, saving their limited time off for when their children could finally come home. Determined to change that reality, the nurses joined forces with working parents, advocates, and elected officials to demand better protections for families.

Their hard work paid off when the Allegheny County Council voted 11-4 to approve the groundbreaking policy! Under the measure, eligible parents will receive 12 weeks of paid leave following childbirth, adoption, foster placement, or stillbirth, with job and health benefit protections. The policy applies to businesses with at least 15 employees and represents a major breakthrough in a state that currently has no statewide paid parental leave program.

This victory shows the incredible power of nurses, workers, and communities coming together to demand meaningful change. By sharing their experiences, organizing supporters, and refusing to give up, these nurses helped secure protections that could inspire similar efforts across Pennsylvania and the country. Their achievement is an important step toward ensuring that working families have the time and financial security they need to care for their loved ones.
