Celebrate Gloria Steinem's Legacy of Feminism

Gloria Steinem, one of the most influential voices of American feminism, died Wednesday at her New York City home. She was 92, and her family said she passed away peacefully, surrounded by people who loved her.

Steinem co-founded Ms. magazine in the early 1970s, giving the feminist movement a national platform it had never had before. She spent decades advocating for reproductive freedom, workplace equality, and sex education, becoming one of the most recognizable faces of the women's rights movement.

Her influence extended well beyond journalism. She helped launch the Women's Media Center alongside Jane Fonda and Robin Morgan, and in 2013 President Obama awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom for a lifetime of activism.

Steinem often said that real change grows "from the bottom," not from the top down. That belief shaped a career built on grassroots organizing and decades of showing up for the movement she helped define.
