Celebrate Democrats Taking Control of Five State Governments

Democrats have secured another major victory in the 2026 midterm elections, winning full control of state governments in Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin! By capturing the governor's office and majorities in both legislative chambers in all five states, Democrats have achieved what are known as government trifectas, giving them new opportunities to advance their legislative priorities. In Wisconsin, Democrats won complete control of state government for the first time in 16 years, flipping both legislative chambers while retaining the governorship. Pennsylvania Democrats achieved their first trifecta since 1993, expanding their majority in the state House and flipping the state Senate to give Governor Josh Shapiro a stronger position heading into his second term. Michigan Democrats also regained full control after flipping the state House, while Democratic Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson won the governorship.

The victories extended to Minnesota and Nevada, where Democrats secured full control of both state governments. In Minnesota, Democrats expanded their legislative majorities as Senator Amy Klobuchar won the governor's race. In Nevada, Attorney General Aaron Ford defeated Republican Governor Joe Lombardo, completing a Democratic trifecta alongside the party's existing legislative majorities. These results come as Democrats also won a majority of governorships nationwide for the first time in 16 years.

These historic gains give Democratic leaders new opportunities to pursue policies on healthcare, reproductive rights, education, workers' rights, and affordability without the same legislative obstacles they previously faced. The party also made significant gains beyond these five states, including flipping governorships in Texas and Georgia and winning control of the North Carolina state House.
