We celebrate the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals' decision to strike down Arizona’s restrictive proof-of-citizenship voting laws, which were designed to suppress the voices of Latino, Native American, student, and naturalized citizen voters. This ruling is a critical victory for democracy, ensuring that every eligible voter in Arizona can exercise their fundamental right to vote without unnecessary and discriminatory barriers. These laws, passed amid baseless claims of mass illegal voting, directly violated the National Voter Registration Act, the Civil Rights Act, and the Equal Protection Clause of the U.S. Constitution. The court’s decision affirms that no state can impose arbitrary and discriminatory obstacles to disenfranchise voters. We thank the voting rights organizations, civil rights groups, and community advocates—including Mi Familia Vota, Campaign Legal Center, and other plaintiffs—who fought tirelessly to defend democracy in Arizona. Their efforts ensured that voter suppression tactics will not stand. This ruling is a victory for all Americans who believe in free and fair elections. We urge continued vigilance against voter suppression and remain committed to protecting the right to vote for every eligible citizen.
