Celebrate California Protecting Ballots and Voting Rights

California just took a major step to protect elections from political interference — and it deserves celebration.

Governor Gavin Newsom signed a new law making it a felony to unlawfully seize ballots, voter rolls, or election materials, directly responding to attempts by election deniers and extremist officials to interfere with the democratic process.

The law was sparked after Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco seized more than 650,000 ballots tied to California’s recent redistricting referendum while promoting baseless election fraud conspiracy theories.

This new safeguard makes clear that no politician, law enforcement official, or extremist group can abuse power to intimidate voters or undermine confidence in elections without consequences.

At a time when democracy continues to face coordinated attacks, California is standing up for election integrity, voter protection, and the rule of law.

Free and fair elections depend on trust, transparency, and ensuring that every lawful vote is protected from political interference and intimidation.
