Block the $5B Saudi Bomb Sale!

On September 4, the Trump administration notified Congress of a $5 billion sale to Saudi Arabia: 10,004 bombs, half of them 500-pounders and half of them 2,000-pounders, each paired with a JDAM guidance kit. We know what these weapons do in Saudi hands. In 2016, a 2,000-pound American bomb on a JDAM kit tore through a crowded market in Mastaba, Yemen, killing at least 97 civilians, including 25 children. In 2018, a 500-pound American bomb hit a school bus in Dahyan and killed 40 children.

This sale couldn't come at a worse moment. The UN-brokered truce that slowed the Saudi-Houthi war in 2022 is cracking, and the UN's envoy for Yemen warned last month of a more serious risk of a return to large-scale war. The United States should be pushing every side back to the negotiating table – not handing Riyadh the firepower to restart a bombing campaign that has already devastated millions of lives, and that could send shockwaves through the oil routes every American household depends on.

Congress has the power to stop this. Under the Arms Export Control Act, any single senator can force a vote to block the sale, and Congress voted to block Saudi bomb sales as recently as 2019. The review window closes in early October, so lawmakers need to hear from their constituents right now.
