Block Republicans' Bill to Abolish the Education Department

Donald Trump just signed an executive order to dismantle the Department of Education.

But despite Trump’s best efforts to have us believe otherwise, eliminating the Department of Education would require an act of Congress.

Predictably, Republicans in Congress wasted no time in adopting Trump’s backward agenda as their own. Rep. Michael Rulli of Ohio immediately announced that he would introduce legislation to codify Trump’s executive order and eliminate the Education Department outright.

We can’t allow this attack on our students and families to move forward. Sign our petition urging Democrats in Congress to do everything in their power to save the Department of Education from Republican attacks.

Let’s be clear about what’s at stake here. If Republicans succeed in dismantling the Department of Education, children who need the most support would be harmed the most. For example, funding for low-income students, those with learning disabilities or other special needs, and English language learners would be cut or eliminated.

Robert Castleberry, a fifth-grade teacher in Kansas laid out the stakes. “We will lose counselors, social workers, behavior specialists—people who ensure safety and stability for students who need it most,” he said. “Without these special needs supports, we aren’t setting students up for success,” he added. “We are setting them up for failure. And that failure won’t be theirs—it will be ours.”
