Ban Members of Congress from Owning Stocks

It’s time to stop the corruption in Congress. A recent report revealed that dozens of lawmakers own stock in defense contractors, profiting directly from the same military spending they oversee.

This conflict of interest is unacceptable, and it’s not just limited to defense. Members of Congress hold stocks in industries like healthcare, energy, and big tech, making decisions that directly impact their personal wealth.

The ETHICS Act is a bipartisan bill that would ban members of Congress, their spouses, and their dependents from owning or trading individual stocks. This isn’t just good policy; it’s common sense.

Public trust in Congress is at an all-time low, and we cannot continue to allow lawmakers to enrich themselves at the expense of the American people.

The consequences of inaction are clear. Experts have long warned that congressional stock trading undermines public confidence in government. As Senator Jeff Merkley said, “Congress shouldn’t be making money off insider information. We need the ETHICS Act to restore faith in our government.”

Right now, lawmakers with insider knowledge of upcoming legislation can buy or sell stocks, making profits that ordinary Americans don’t have access to. This corruption must end. The ETHICS Act is a critical step toward cleaning up Congress and ensuring that our elected officials are working for us, not their own financial interests.

By signing this petition, you’re demanding that Congress pass the ETHICS Act and ban stock trading by its members. Let’s make sure our government is focused on serving the public, not enriching itself.
