Applaud Virginia Democrats for Taking Action on Gun Safety

Virginia Democrats are taking decisive steps to protect communities — and they deserve our applause.

Lawmakers in the Virginia House of Delegates have advanced landmark legislation to ban the sale of assault weapons, crack down on ghost guns, keep firearms out of hospitals and college campuses, and finally hold the gun industry accountable when its actions cause harm. These bills move Virginia closer to a future where public safety comes first and lives are valued over profits.

This is leadership rooted in lived experience and hard truth. As Delegate Dan Helmer, a former U.S. Army captain, made clear: weapons designed for the battlefield do not belong in our neighborhoods. Survivors, families, and advocates — including those impacted by the Virginia Tech shooting — have waited far too long for lawmakers to act with the urgency this crisis demands.

Just as importantly, Virginia Democrats are challenging the gun industry’s long-standing immunity by allowing victims of gun violence to seek justice in court. Accountability is how industries are forced to act responsibly — and the firearms industry should be no exception when its products devastate families and communities.
