Applaud the Voting Rights Groups Fighting to Protect Voters

Every eligible American deserves the freedom to vote without unnecessary barriers—and these voting rights advocates deserve our applause for standing up to protect that fundamental right.

The League of Women Voters and the Electronic Privacy Information Center are asking the courts to stop four states from using an expanded federal voter-screening system that they argue could wrongly target eligible voters and put lawful registrations at risk.

The groups contend that the expanded system relies on government records that may be incomplete or outdated, creating the possibility that eligible citizens—including naturalized Americans—could be forced to prove their citizenship or risk losing their ability to vote.

Our democracy is strongest when every eligible voter can cast a ballot with confidence that they will not face unnecessary obstacles or be removed from the voter rolls because of government errors. Protecting both election integrity and the voting rights of eligible citizens are essential to maintaining public trust in our democratic process.
