Applaud the States Fighting to Protect School Mental Health

Every student deserves access to mental health support at school—and these state leaders deserve applause.

Attorneys general from 15 states have filed a lawsuit to stop the Trump administration from cutting funding for a bipartisan school mental health program that helps schools hire and train counselors, psychologists, and other mental health professionals.

Congress created this program in the wake of the tragic school shooting in Parkland, Florida, recognizing that students need greater access to mental health services and support. Since then, the program has helped provide mental and behavioral health services to hundreds of thousands of students across the country.

Young people today face unprecedented challenges, including anxiety, depression, loneliness, substance use, and the lasting effects of violence and trauma. School-based mental health professionals play a vital role in helping students succeed academically, build resilience, and access care when they need it most.

The states bringing this lawsuit are standing up for students, educators, and families by fighting to preserve resources that schools rely on every day. They are also defending the principle that congressionally approved funding cannot be arbitrarily taken away.

Protecting children's mental health is not a partisan issue—it is an investment in healthier schools, stronger communities, and brighter futures.
