Applaud the Ruling Defending Karen Attiah

An independent arbitrator has ordered The Washington Post to reinstate opinion columnist Karen Attiah, ruling that the newspaper improperly fired her over social media posts she made following the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

Attiah, a union-protected employee who had spent more than a decade at the Post, was fired for “gross misconduct” just hours after editors became aware of her posts. But the arbitrator found that decision was “absolutely disproportional” and unsupported by good and sufficient cause, ordering the Post to reinstate Attiah and compensate her for lost wages.

Journalists, especially opinion writers, must be able to express viewpoints without facing unjust punishment. And workers represented by a union deserve the protections their contracts guarantee, including a fair process before losing their livelihoods.

The arbitrator also rejected the idea that Attiah could be held responsible for threats made by others in response to her speech. Punishing a journalist because bad actors threaten retaliation risks rewarding intimidation rather than protecting freedom of expression.

This ruling is an important victory for workplace protections, journalistic independence, and the principle that employers must respect the rights of their workers.
