In a powerful stand for fairness, clean energy, and the rule of law, a coalition of environmental groups and the city of St. Paul have sued the Trump administration over its blatant, partisan attack on climate funding for Democratic-led states. During the ongoing government shutdown, the White House terminated more than $7.5 billion in clean energy funding— targeting 16 states that voted against Trump. Projects to expand electric vehicle infrastructure, reduce methane emissions, and help families lower energy costs were all deliberately gutted — solely because those states leaned blue. The lawsuit rightly calls this what it is: “intentional discrimination” and “bare animus” — an abuse of power designed to punish Americans for how they voted. These cruel, politically motivated cuts violate the Fifth Amendment’s equal protection clause and could devastate local economies, public health, and our climate future. As one plaintiff said, “They did nothing wrong other than being located in a state whose citizens engage in political speech that the government disfavors.” That’s not democracy — that’s retaliation. Add your name to applaud St. Paul and the clean energy coalition for standing up to Trump’s partisan attacks — and for defending fairness, equality, and the right to a livable planet for all Americans.
