Applaud the Judge Who Stood Up for the Rule of Law

A federal judge just delivered an important victory for accountability and the integrity of our justice system — and it deserves our applause.

Judge David Novak has barred Trump loyalist Lindsey Halligan from “masquerading” as the top federal prosecutor in Virginia’s Eastern District, making clear that no one can simply claim the power of a U.S. Attorney without being lawfully appointed. His order blocks Halligan from representing herself as the U.S. Attorney in court filings or proceedings unless she is properly confirmed by the Senate or legally appointed through the correct process.

This ruling is about something bigger than one person: it’s about protecting the legitimacy of our courts and stopping political interference in prosecution. Federal prosecutors wield enormous power — and that power must never be handed out through backdoor appointments or political favoritism.

By enforcing the law and setting clear boundaries, Judge Novak upheld a basic principle of democracy: the justice system belongs to the people — not to political loyalists.
