Applaud the Judge Who Protected SNAP for Minnesota Families

A federal judge just stepped in to protect hungry families from political retaliation — and she deserves our applause.

Last week, U.S. District Judge Laura M. Provinzino temporarily blocked the Trump administration from cutting off tens of millions of dollars in SNAP funding for Minnesota — vital food assistance that helps children, seniors, and working families put meals on the table.

The administration threatened to withhold funding unless Minnesota “recertified” nearly 100,000 households in just 30 days — an impossible demand that state leaders warned would cause immediate harm across the state. Minnesota sued, arguing that the USDA’s order was unlawful and far outside the agency’s authority.

Judge Provinzino agreed, writing that the administration failed to provide a reasoned explanation for its drastic action and questioning why such a rushed timeline was necessary. Her order now blocks the administration from withholding SNAP funds while the case moves forward — ensuring that families don’t lose access to food while politicians play games with people’s lives.

SNAP isn’t a “handout.” It’s a lifeline. And no president should be allowed to threaten kids’ meals or punish communities based on headlines or politics.
