Applaud the Judge Protecting Work Permits for Immigrants

Families who follow the law deserve fairness and due process—and this federal judge deserves applause for protecting thousands of immigrants from suddenly losing their ability to work.

U.S. District Judge Nathaniel Gorton temporarily blocked the Trump administration from revoking work permits for thousands of asylum seekers and people with Temporary Protected Status (TPS) from countries including El Salvador, Sudan, and Ukraine while a legal challenge moves forward.

For many families, the ability to work legally means being able to pay rent, buy groceries, care for their children, and contribute to their communities. Abruptly taking away work authorization can create unnecessary hardship for people who have relied on longstanding humanitarian protections while following the legal process.

Our legal system exists to ensure that major policy changes comply with the law and receive careful judicial review before they take effect. By pausing these changes, the court is helping protect due process while allowing the legal challenge to be fully considered.
