Applaud The Intercept for Challenging Trump’s Scheme

The Intercept, joined by the Freedom of the Press Foundation, has filed a federal lawsuit challenging a new Truth Social service that charges as much as $100,000 a month for instantaneous access to Trump’s posts before they appear publicly. The lawsuit argues that this arrangement could give wealthy subscribers, including financial firms, an early look at potentially market-moving information while financially benefiting a company controlled by the president.

Americans should never have to wonder whether people with enough money can buy privileged access to information coming from the president. Public officials have a responsibility to serve the public interest, and government information should not become an opportunity for personal enrichment or special treatment for those willing to pay.

The lawsuit argues that the arrangement violates constitutional protections and asks the courts to block the service. Whatever the ultimate outcome, demanding judicial scrutiny of such an unprecedented conflict of interest is an important step toward transparency and accountability.

By bringing this challenge, The Intercept and the Freedom of the Press Foundation are standing up for equal access to public information and the principle that the presidency should never be used as a personal money-making operation.
