Applaud the ICC Judges Holding Trump Accountable

Judges must be free to decide cases based on the law — not fear of political retaliation.

Three judges from the International Criminal Court have filed a lawsuit challenging sanctions imposed by the Trump administration, arguing that they were punished simply for carrying out their judicial duties. Their case defends a principle that is essential to every democracy: courts must remain independent from political pressure.

Judicial independence protects the integrity of the legal system. When judges can issue decisions without fear of personal punishment, political intimidation, or financial retaliation, the rule of law is strengthened and justice can be administered fairly.

The lawsuit also raises important questions about the use of government power to target members of the judiciary for decisions with which political leaders disagree. Regardless of the outcome of any individual case, judges should never face retaliation simply for fulfilling their legal responsibilities.

An independent judiciary is one of the cornerstones of democratic government. Protecting judges from political interference helps preserve fair courts, due process, and public confidence that justice is based on law—not politics.

Add your name to applaud the judges standing up for judicial independence, the rule of law, and the principle that courts must remain free from political intimidation.
