Applaud the Groups Defending Free Speech and Human Rights

Speaking out for human rights should never be a crime—and these organizations deserve applause.

Two U.S. advocacy organizations have filed a lawsuit challenging the Trump administration's sanctions on International Criminal Court officials, Palestinian human rights organizations, and a United Nations expert, arguing that the measures unlawfully restrict Americans' First Amendment rights.

The lawsuit contends that the sanctions have forced U.S. organizations, researchers, lawyers, and advocates to end collaborations, cancel projects, and avoid constitutionally protected speech out of fear of legal consequences.

The First Amendment protects the freedom to speak, advocate, conduct research, and work with others on matters of public concern—even when those issues are controversial. Protecting those freedoms helps ensure that Americans can engage in public debate, support human rights, and exchange ideas without government retaliation.

The organizations bringing this case are asking the courts to reaffirm that constitutional rights cannot be curtailed simply because the government disagrees with the viewpoints or advocacy involved.

Freedom of speech, freedom of association, and the ability to advocate peacefully are cornerstones of a democratic society. Defending those rights protects everyone, regardless of political beliefs or the issues they choose to support.

Add your name to applaud the organizations standing up for free speech, constitutional rights, and the principle that Americans should be free to advocate for human rights without fear of government retaliation.
