Applaud the Grand Jury for Exposing Misused Medicaid Funds

Florida taxpayers deserve to know where their money goes, and a grand jury deserves applause for sounding the alarm after finding that $10 million from a state Medicaid settlement was misused for political purposes.

According to the grand jury report, the money originated from a $67 million settlement with healthcare company Centene over allegations of Medicaid overbilling. Instead of the full settlement going to the state, $10 million was directed to the Hope Florida Foundation, the fundraising arm of an initiative created by Florida First Lady Casey DeSantis.

The grand jury found that the money was then quickly transferred to two political groups before ultimately helping fund a campaign opposing a marijuana legalization ballot measure backed by Florida voters. The report concluded that taxpayer money had been misused for political purposes and called for reforms to prevent it from happening again.

While the grand jury said there was insufficient evidence to criminally charge anyone because it could not determine who directed the transfer, that makes transparency and accountability even more important. Public officials should be able to explain who authorized the movement of millions of dollars and why money stemming from a Medicaid settlement ended up financing political activity.

Funds connected to Medicaid should serve the public interest—not become part of what the grand jury described as a scheme to fund political activities.
