We applaud the Government Accountability Office (GAO) for courageously rejecting the Trump administration’s unconstitutional attempt to assert control over a key congressional watchdog agency.

When Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) attempted to install its own officials at the GAO — an independent legislative agency that ensures taxpayer dollars are spent lawfully — GAO leadership firmly said no. Their action protects the fundamental principle of separation of powers and keeps legislative oversight free from executive interference.

This attempted power grab was not an isolated incident. It follows a dangerous pattern by President Trump to claim control over institutions that hold him accountable — including efforts to take over the Library of Congress. GAO’s clear and principled rejection of DOGE’s interference sends a powerful message: our democracy depends on strong, independent institutions, and they won’t be bullied into submission.
