Applaud the Court’s Order to Shut Down “Alligator Alcatraz”

In a huge victory for human rights and environmental justice, a federal judge has ordered the Trump/DeSantis-backed “Alligator Alcatraz” immigration detention center in Florida’s fragile Everglades to shut down operations within 60 days.

This massive 5,000-bed facility was built on an old airstrip in one of America’s most sensitive ecosystems, threatening endangered wildlife, ancestral tribal lands, and decades of restoration efforts. It also subjected detained immigrants to inhumane conditions — surrounded by alligators, sweltering in heat and mosquitoes, with inadequate access to food and water.

This victory was made possible by the tireless advocacy of the Miccosukee Tribe, environmental groups, and immigrant rights organizations who refused to let cruelty and destruction define our values.
