Applaud the Court’s Halt on ‘Alligator Alcatraz’

A federal judge has stepped in to protect one of America’s most precious and fragile ecosystems by ordering a temporary halt to new construction at the controversial “Alligator Alcatraz” immigration detention center.

This facility, built in sensitive wetlands that are home to rare and protected species, threatens to undo decades of environmental restoration work. Thanks to the efforts of the Miccosukee Tribe and environmental advocates, the court has stopped any new filling, paving, or infrastructure while legal challenges move forward.

The lawsuit argues that the detention center violates the National Environmental Policy Act — a vital law that requires the federal government to fully assess the environmental impacts of major projects and give the public a voice before they’re built. The judge’s decision is a critical step toward ensuring our laws are followed, our environment is preserved, and our communities are protected.
