We applaud U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth for defending democracy, free press, and constitutional checks and balances by ordering the Trump administration to restore $12 million in funding to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL). For 75 years, RFE/RL has delivered independent journalism to people living under authoritarian regimes. Judge Lamberth’s ruling affirms that the executive branch cannot unilaterally override Congress and shut down a vital, pro-democracy institution. His words underscore the essential role of the judiciary in preserving the separation of powers — a cornerstone of American democracy. This decision ensures that RFE/RL can continue broadcasting in 27 languages across 23 countries, protecting press freedom and countering disinformation. At a time when authoritarianism is on the rise globally and at home, preserving voices of truth is more urgent than ever. We thank Judge Lamberth for his courageous ruling and stand with journalists, democracy advocates, and all those who believe in a free press.
