Applaud the Court for Protecting Voting Rights

In a major victory for democracy and the Constitution, a federal judge has struck down Donald Trump’s latest voter suppression scheme — blocking his unlawful attempt to require documentary proof of citizenship for federal voter registration.

Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly ruled that Trump’s executive order was an unconstitutional power grab, violating the separation of powers and overstepping presidential authority. As she made clear, the president has no role in setting voter qualifications or changing election procedures — those powers belong to Congress and the states.

This ruling is a powerful reaffirmation that our elections belong to the people, not to politicians who want to manipulate the rules to cling to power. The proof-of-citizenship mandate would have thrown up barriers for countless eligible voters — especially women, young people, and naturalized citizens — while doing nothing to address the virtually nonexistent issue of noncitizen voting.

Civil rights groups, the ACLU, and Democratic leaders fought tirelessly to stop this unconstitutional assault on voting rights. And thanks to this landmark decision, millions of Americans can continue to register and vote freely — without unnecessary burdens or intimidation.

Add your name to applaud Judge Kollar-Kotelly and the advocates defending the right to vote — and to stand up for free, fair, and accessible elections for all Americans.
