Applaud the Court for Protecting Patients and Doctors

U.S. District Judge B. Lynn Winmill ruled that Idaho cannot punish doctors for providing abortions when necessary to prevent serious physical or mental health harms, finding that the state’s near-total abortion restrictions violated constitutional protections. Under the laws, physicians could otherwise face prison time and the loss of their medical licenses.

The ruling means doctors like maternal-fetal medicine specialist Dr. Stacy Seyb can offer medically necessary care to patients facing grave pregnancy complications without forcing them to leave Idaho simply because their condition has not yet become life-threatening.

Patients should not have to wait until they are on the brink of death before doctors are allowed to intervene. Medical decisions involving serious health risks should be guided by patients and qualified healthcare professionals—not by the threat of criminal prosecution.

The court also recognized that mental health deserves the same serious consideration as physical health, rejecting a distinction that could deny critical care to pregnant patients at risk of self-harm.

By protecting doctors who provide health-preserving care, this ruling puts patients’ health and dignity ahead of government interference in deeply personal medical decisions.

Add your name to applaud Judge B. Lynn Winmill for protecting pregnant patients, defending doctors’ ability to provide necessary medical care, and standing up against government interference in healthcare decisions.
