Applaud the Court for Protecting Mail and Early Voting

A California judge has temporarily blocked Shasta County’s Measure B, preventing a sweeping election overhaul from taking effect before the November election. The measure would have eliminated mail voting and early voting, required hand-counting ballots, imposed new voter ID rules, and created a separate county voter registration system.

The court found that most of those changes likely conflict with state law and warned that attempting to build an entirely new election system just months before a major election could create confusion and disrupt voting.

Mail voting and early voting give people more flexibility to participate in democracy, including seniors, working families, people with disabilities, caregivers, and voters who cannot easily make it to the polls on Election Day. Abruptly eliminating those options risks making it harder for eligible citizens to cast their ballots.

The ruling also reinforces an important principle: local governments must follow statewide election laws and cannot create unnecessary barriers simply because some officials disagree with the existing system.
