Applaud the Court for Protecting Judicial Independence

In a landmark decision, U.S. District Judge Thomas Cullen has thrown out the Trump administration’s unprecedented lawsuit against 15 federal judges in Maryland — a brazen attempt to undermine judicial independence and fast-track deportations.

This case began after Maryland’s Chief Judge George Russell issued a standing order requiring a brief two-day pause before migrants challenging their detention could be deported. The Trump administration responded with an extraordinary and dangerous move: suing the entire Maryland federal bench.

Judge Cullen rightly dismissed the suit, reaffirming that the executive branch cannot trample over the judiciary or strip immigrants of their right to due process. His ruling makes clear that disputes between co-equal branches of government must follow lawful appeals, not political intimidation.

This is more than a win for judicial independence — it’s a victory for fairness, accountability, and the rule of law. By upholding protections for migrants, the court also defended the principle that no one — not even a president — is above the Constitution.
