Applaud the Court for Protecting Immigrant Children

In a major victory for compassion and the rule of law, U.S. District Judge Dolly Gee has once again defended the rights of immigrant children by rejecting the Trump administration’s latest attempt to dismantle the Flores Settlement Agreement.

For nearly three decades, this landmark agreement has set crucial standards to ensure children in federal custody are treated with dignity — guaranteeing basics like food, water, medical care, safe shelter, and limits on how long children can be detained. Judge Gee’s ruling makes clear that these protections are not optional, and they cannot be stripped away for political convenience.

The Trump administration’s effort to abandon Flores would have opened the door to indefinite child detention in unsafe facilities — a cruel and unlawful move that Judge Gee rightly rejected. As she reminded the court, the improvements the government points to today exist precisely because Flores has been enforced. To weaken it now would be to turn back the clock on decades of progress in protecting children’s rights.
