Applaud the ACLU for Defending Birthright Citizenship

The ACLU and other advocacy groups are asking a federal judge to block Donald Trump’s latest executive orders restricting which children born in the United States are automatically recognized as citizens. The groups argue that the new orders are an attempt to circumvent a Supreme Court ruling that rejected Trump’s earlier effort to restrict birthright citizenship as a violation of the 14th Amendment.

For generations, the 14th Amendment has established a fundamental constitutional guarantee of American citizenship. That protection should not depend on who occupies the White House or be stripped away through unilateral presidential action.

When an administration attempts to push beyond constitutional limits, civil rights organizations and the courts play an essential role in defending the rights of those who could otherwise have little power to fight back.

By challenging these latest orders, the ACLU and its partners are standing up for the Constitution, the rule of law, and children whose citizenship could be placed in jeopardy.
