Applaud the 19 Democratic AGs Defending Our Democracy

We celebrate and stand in solidarity with the 19 courageous Democratic attorneys general who have filed a landmark lawsuit challenging President Donald Trump’s unconstitutional executive order seeking to overhaul federal elections.

By filing this lawsuit in federal court, these attorneys general have made it clear: no president has the authority to unilaterally rewrite election laws, undermine state control over voting systems, or disenfranchise Americans through baseless claims of fraud.

As New York Attorney General Letitia James rightly said, “Donald Trump’s attempt to control our elections, intimidate voters, and limit Americans’ right to vote is unconstitutional, undemocratic, and frankly, un-American.” We could not agree more.

Trump’s order, which imposes burdensome proof-of-citizenship requirements and threatens to cut federal funding from states that don’t comply with his mandates, is a direct assault on our most fundamental democratic right: the right to vote. These efforts serve no real purpose beyond suppressing the vote, especially among marginalized and vulnerable communities.

The attorneys general involved in this suit have taken a bold and necessary step to protect our elections, our Constitution, and our voices. Their lawsuit defends the longstanding authority of the states to administer their own elections and resists federal overreach that would jeopardize fair access to the ballot box.

We applaud these public servants for standing up to executive overreach and for working to ensure that our democracy remains of, by, and for the people.

Their leadership is a reminder that defending democracy requires vigilance, courage, and action — and that millions of Americans are counting on them to hold the line.
