Applaud Texas Landowners For Challenging Big Bend Wall

Texas landowners are taking the Trump administration to court over plans to build hundreds of miles of border barriers and related infrastructure across the remote Big Bend region. Conserve Big Bend and six landowners filed a federal lawsuit challenging the government’s authority to fast-track construction through private property.

The administration designated the Big Bend Sector an area of “high illegal entry,” a determination the lawsuit says allows the Department of Homeland Security to use expedited construction powers and bypass numerous environmental, cultural, historic-preservation, and other federal protections. But the landowners argue that the government’s own border statistics undermine that designation.

The stakes are also deeply personal for local families. Conserve Big Bend says roughly 65% of the planned project would cross private property, and landowners have received notices identifying their land as potentially needed for construction. Some say the project could divide family ranches, interfere with farming and irrigation, restrict access to the Rio Grande, and permanently alter property that has remained in their families for generations.
