Applaud States for Defending Family Planning Care

A coalition of 23 states is taking the Trump administration to court over new restrictions on Title X, fighting to protect the federal family planning program that helps millions of people—particularly low-income patients—access reproductive and sexual healthcare.

The lawsuit challenges new Department of Health and Human Services conditions that would judge grant applicants based heavily on whether they comply with the administration’s ideological priorities, including its positions on hormonal contraception, diversity and inclusion policies, and transgender identities and healthcare.

States warn that providers could lose their entire Title X grants if they fail to comply. That could leave states scrambling to replace millions of dollars in federal funding and potentially force clinics to reduce services or close altogether, depriving low-income patients of critical care.

New York Attorney General Letitia James is leading the lawsuit alongside attorneys general from across the country and the governors of Kentucky and Pennsylvania. They argue that the administration cannot use essential federal healthcare funding as leverage to force states and providers to adopt its political agenda.

Title X exists to make family planning and reproductive healthcare accessible—not to serve as an ideological litmus test. Patients deserve access to accurate information and essential care regardless of their income, identity, or where they live.
