We applaud the leaders of Nevada and the 18 other states who are courageously standing up to President Donald Trump’s illegal attempt to seize control of America’s election systems. Trump’s executive order, which falsely claims to promote “election integrity,” is a dangerous and unconstitutional power grab that threatens the core of our democracy. His order seeks to override state laws, weaponize federal agencies like the Department of Justice, and deploy Elon Musk’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to meddle in secure state-run voter systems. It would interfere with how votes are counted, violate privacy protections, and obstruct long-established voter registration procedures. We commend the state officials who are fighting back — especially those, like Nevada’s chief elections officer, who are making it clear that our elections belong to the people, not the presidency. The Constitution grants states the authority to run their elections, not the federal government, and certainly not a president chasing unconstitutional fantasies of a third term. These leaders are defending the right of every eligible voter to be heard, including the 1% of ballots that arrive by mail after Election Day but are legally cast. They are rejecting unlawful threats to withhold election funding and resisting chaos-inducing mandates that Congress has not approved. This is not just a fight over voter registration forms or mail-in deadlines — it’s a fight for the soul of our democracy. Thank you to all the attorneys general, secretaries of state, and governors who are protecting our elections, our rights, and our Constitution. We stand with you.
