Applaud States Challenging Trump's Project Cancellations

California and New York are taking the Trump administration to court over federal agreements to cancel several offshore wind projects and redirect investment toward other energy sources.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta filed a lawsuit challenging the cancellation of offshore wind leases held by Invenergy, including a project planned off California’s coast. New York Attorney General Letitia James is leading a separate multistate challenge involving agreements with Invenergy and Bluepoint Wind.

Together, the challenged agreements involve roughly $1.4 billion in federal payments to the companies in exchange for abandoning offshore wind leases. Under the agreements, the companies would instead direct investment toward projects including natural gas and geothermal energy.

The states argue that the federal government lacked legal authority to make the agreements and that canceling the projects could interfere with their plans to expand electricity generation and meet growing energy demand. Attorneys general from Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Vermont joined New York’s lawsuit.
