Applaud State Democrats Taking a Stand on Accountability

Across four states, Democratic lawmakers are sending a powerful message: public service should reflect community values — and actions have consequences.

In New Jersey, Maryland, California, and Washington state, Democrats have introduced legislation that would bar individuals who join ICE during Trump’s mass deportation campaign from later holding certain state civil service positions, including roles in law enforcement and public education.

These bills are rooted in a clear concern: that aggressive and controversial immigration enforcement tactics — including reports of racial profiling, unlawful detentions, and family separations — should not be rewarded with seamless transitions into trusted public-facing roles at the state level.

State lawmakers are asserting their right to determine who is best suited to serve in positions of public trust. They argue that communities deserve educators, police officers, and civil servants who are aligned with principles of due process, civil rights, and equal protection under the law.

This effort is part of a broader pushback against policies that many view as harmful to immigrant families and local communities. Whether or not every provision survives legal challenges, the message is unmistakable: states are not powerless, and leaders are willing to act.

Add your name to applaud these Democratic lawmakers for standing up for civil rights, defending community values, and making clear that public service must reflect accountability and respect for human dignity.
