Applaud Senate Democrats for Standing Up for Oversight

Congress has a constitutional responsibility to debate matters of war and peace—and these senators deserve applause.

Senate Democrats have blocked a massive defense policy bill, arguing that Congress should not move forward with one of the nation's largest annual military measures without first addressing President Trump's expanding military actions against Iran and reaffirming Congress's constitutional role in authorizing the use of force.

The Constitution gives Congress—not the president alone—the power to declare war. That system of checks and balances exists to ensure that decisions about military conflict receive careful debate, public accountability, and democratic oversight.

As lawmakers raised concerns about continued U.S. military involvement in Iran, they called for clear guardrails and greater congressional input before advancing legislation that would authorize record levels of defense policy and spending.

Regardless of political party, Americans deserve transparency when the nation faces the possibility of deeper military conflict. Congress has an obligation to ask difficult questions, exercise oversight, and ensure that major decisions affecting national security are made through the constitutional process.

Protecting democratic accountability means ensuring that no president can sidestep Congress when decisions about war carry enormous consequences for service members, families, and the country.

Add your name to applaud the senators defending congressional oversight, constitutional checks and balances, and accountability before expanding U.S. military involvement overseas.
