Applaud New Jersey Voters Challenging Voter Roll Removals

New Jersey voters are taking Ocean County election officials to court over a controversial voter registration challenge process targeting Democratic and unaffiliated voters ahead of the November midterm elections. The League of Women Voters of New Jersey and three Bay Head residents have filed a lawsuit seeking to stop eligible voters from being removed from the rolls.

The controversy began when a local Republican official submitted a list of 39 voters whose property tax bills were mailed outside Bay Head. Every person on the list was registered as either a Democrat or unaffiliated. County officials subsequently sent those voters detailed questionnaires warning that their right to vote could be challenged. The lawsuit alleges that the process unfairly singled out voters based on political affiliation.

Among the plaintiffs is Ada Draesel, a longtime Bay Head homeowner who has voted at the same polling place for decades. She reportedly received repeated questionnaires and a phone call requesting personal information. Another plaintiff, Scott Colby, says he spent days gathering documents to prove his residency and remains concerned about whether his ballot will count.

With a hearing scheduled for the same day as New Jersey's voter registration deadline, the plaintiffs are asking the court to intervene before eligible voters risk losing their ability to participate in the November election. Their lawsuit challenges the county's procedures under state voting rights and equal protection laws.
